Brian H. & Onyx
Veteran: Brian H.
Branch of Service: U.S. Army
Dog Name: Onyx
Brian joined the Army in 2020 after spending time with AmeriCorps NCCC, traveling the U.S. to help communities recover from natural disasters. Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, Brian was driven by a desire to serve with purpose—something that led him to follow in his father’s footsteps and enlist in the military.
Since joining, he’s been stationed in Germany and Kentucky, and forward deployed across Europe. His role in air defense has given him the unique opportunity to work alongside diverse teams and international partners, shaping not only his military career but also his personal growth. Outside of service, Brian is pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, working toward a future where he can combine his artistic talents with entrepreneurship to build a meaningful life for his family.
In 2024, Brian married the love of his life, whose daily challenges with cerebral palsy have strengthened their bond and deepened his sense of purpose. Together, they welcomed Onyx, a spirited puppy who’s quickly become part of the family. With deployments on the horizon, Brian is determined to ensure Onyx can grow into a reliable service dog—providing emotional support for him and physical assistance for his wife.
Thanks to Sierra Delta’s support, Brian is taking steps to provide Onyx with the specialized training needed for a lifetime of service and companionship. From learning retrieval tasks and leash control to detecting anxiety and offering stability, each lesson brings them closer to a shared goal: building a more independent, supported, and connected future as a family.
